Bodie's Methodist Church, erected in 1882
Bodie is an old mining town in eastern California that was established when gold was discovered in the area in 1859. By 1879, its population numbered about 10,000. Between 1860 and 1941, the Bodie Mining District produced close to $100 million in gold and silver. By 1913, the major mine closed and the town began to deteriorate. in 1920, the census reported only 120 residents.
